Brawler mages are a class of mage that specialize in a specific kind of levitation spell in order to fight with massive, tethered gauntlets. This technique requires a specific kind of hekate fluid that was designed to both apply and resist large amounts of force while also being easy to maintain its form while in motion. Brawler mages commonly refer to this type of hekate fluid as "zänker oil".

While the idea of fist fighting with hekate fluid has been around for as long as mages have existed, the exact origins of brawler mages themselves are a little muddy. The most popular origin story goes as such: a group of drunk mages had gotten into a fist fight at a bar in Sky City Miria. The ensuing brawl eventually led to them hurling beer mugs at each other via magic. One of the mages didn't cast their spell properly, with the beer mug becoming stuck in a long glob of hekate fluid. Determined to defeat his foe, the mage started flailing the mug around. After the fight was over, when they were all eventually thrown out of the building, the mage realized that what he had been doing might have some potential. And so over time, with the help of many people, he developed a technique that would later become synonymous with brawler mages.
