This started out as a commission. I got to do a complete redesign of his fursona, Luc Harmless, in order to fit in my dieselpunk world. Plus it gave me an excuse to draw this concept art out. His character is the cross fox in the blue vest with the armature arm (more on that after the break). The guy in the green vest is my generic dieselpunk gangster cat design, but with better anatomy and without a coat. And in the background, we can see his armachist shop (more on that after the break) and Sky City Miria.

----------------------

Armatures are mechanical prosthetic limbs and other prosthesis that can be found among those living in the skies of Aether. They are substitutes for limbs lost due to a defect, accident, illness, or wartime injury, though they are also sometimes done on purpose for cosmetic and self-improvement purposes.

Armatures are most commonly utilized as replacements for external limbs and appendages. These are refereed to as "armature limbs". There are five main categories of armature limbs: transtibial (below the knee; BK), transfemoral (above the knee; AK), transradial (below the elbow; BE), transhumeral (above the elbow; AE), and transcoccyxal (tail / below the tailbone; BT).

Armature limbs work by utilizing standard robotics with an artemis-based myoelectrical interface that reads the electromyography signals from the amputee's muscle contractions, allowing the armature to act as any normal arm would. The limbs connect to the body using a specific type of artemis called "pepromene". Pepromene can read and deliver the electromyography signals to the armature limb, while acting as something like an epoxy, fusing the limb to the cup-like myoelectrical interface, and thus the armature itself. This allows the armature to quite literally become an extension of the amputee's skeletal structure. The pepromene will permanently stay fused to the body and armature until a separation solution is injected into the interface.

There are also specific kinds of armatures for more substantial injuries, such as extreme spinal damage and cases where large sections of the body are damaged beyond repair (beyond just a limb). These transbodyal armatures are less commonly seen, due to how difficult and expensive these particular prosthesis are to make. The vast majority of those few people with transbodyal armatures have some strong connections to the science sections of the military, or are very rich individuals that can self-fund the creation of these armatures. There is also the issue that those that would need a transbodyal armature are often so heavily injured, due to the circumstances of their need of one, that they end up dying before the armature can even be created.

Things like implants are even less commonly seen, due to how armatures work. While technically it is possible to create an armature implant, the result would look rather frightening (if it doesn't kill you). Armatures are bulky and not squeaky clean due to the mechanical parts, and so trying to tuck them inside a body (instead of fitting them around the outside) can cause serious damage, such as deadly infections, internal bleeding, damaged organs / arteries, and all sorts of effects you'd imagine would happen when you shove a complicated piece of bulky machinery inside a tiny part of your body. Whenever something like this is truly necessary, the end result is someone with a bunch of metal jutting out the sides of their body. As it currently stands with Aether's modern technology, armature implants simply are not as effective as they could be. The result is dangerous for the user, is much less effective than the organic counterpart, and looks absolutely hideous, not to mention is very cumbersome for the user.

----------------------

Armachists are the Aetherans (those living in the skies of Aether) that create the armatures. They accompany different roles, such as the initial creation, repair, tailoring, customization, and whatnot. They often compare themselves to that of a clothing tailor, but with mechanical limbs instead of fancy suits. Armachist shops are also set up to be very much like a clothing tailor's shop, adding more to the tailor comparison. They are usually knowledgeable when it comes to engineering, and have a good sense of artistic design. Armachist shops are specialty stores that each have their own flare to them, and thus vary in their price, quality, availability, and how widespread they are within a part of a sky city. Some armachists work with each other for the good of their craft, some are more competitive, and some just go about doing what they do (with varying results to either end).

Armachists usually do regular limbs, but also sometimes make specialty pieces, such as split-limbs, job-specific parts (like something useful for a waitress, cook, heavy laborer, underworld worker, entertainer, and whatnot), and weapon-infused limbs. These weapon armatures require a special permit in order to do make that kind of limb legally, otherwise the armachist would get in massive trouble with the law. Aetherans with weapon armatures would also need to sign some papers as well (like how you would need gun permits to own one). Usually, someone would be allowed to have whatever you want with the right paperwork, but brandishing the actual weapon parts in public can get you in trouble if reported (flipping a weapon out in a crowd of people is a bad idea). The mafia can get around this with some good old fashioned bribery, and pirates just have run out past the city limits if caught (or just bribe the law enforcement, or just show the paperwork if they have it legally). With all that being said, pirates and mafias don't care about the legality of things sometimes. Armachists that make illegal weapon armatures usually have ties to local gangs and mafias that assist them with any legal matters that come up.
